As I pulled my bike up to the bike rack at my apartment building today after class, I started to thank God that I'd made it home safely, especially since there were a lot of cars on the road between my college and my apartment. At first, I thought, Isn't that what I'm supposed to do when I get home safely? But after thinking about that for just a minute, I challenged it in my mind: So I should thank God, I asked myself, because I looked both ways before crossing the street, because I looked over my shoulder before changing lanes, because I kept my eye on stopped cars to make sure that they looked both ways before they started moving? (I don't like the constant use of the pronoun "I" in that sentence, but I'm trying to make a point).
I just find it funny to think that if a Christian makes it home safely, he credits God, but if something happens to him, then he blames either himself or someone else... but never our Protector.
If God really orchestrates our safe travels, we wouldn't find a need to look both ways, or to watch for other cars. I am really unsure if God protects us from each other. I don't have any less faith in Him. Just different faith. Prudence never hurts on the roadways. But I argue that prudence and care are everything when it comes to our own safety.
